Fuel connector

Hi again guys.
Are evinrude fuel connectors known to be not very good? The one on my engine is plastic with two pins. One is the fuel and I think the other one is just to stabilise the conection. The female end goes on the fuel line from the tank and has a metal catch on one side. It is on a 6hp Fisherman.
It needs no persuasion at all to fall off, and when I prime the bulb, fuel squirts out. I also think this is causing a fault with my engine which runs for a while fine but then revvs a lot before dying. This doesn't seem to happen when I pump the bulb constantly.
Does anyone have any thoughts?

Something is wrong if it is falling off. And of course if it is leaking, the fuel pump will suck air instead of gas. Some of them have a thin metal sleeve in the female hole that you mention. It that sleeve is loose and slides a bit toward the retaining clip, it will keep the clip from seating in the groove in the mating part.

Are they any good? Of course they are. And there are a ton of aftermarket ones out there that are well......

The o-ring in the OEM ones is replaceable if it leaks. Aftermarket ones, well......

Given the low price of fuel connectors, it's usually just easier to replace the one that's not working. Go to the marina, a dealer, or even Wallyworld. You can pick up a new one.

But first, check your hoses. If they're cracked or stiff, just buy the whole assembly with fittings, hose, and bulb. Your outboard will thank you.

If...on the other hand...the male connector is funky (rare), you'll have to go to a dealer to get a new one.

ADD: One further note. I don't know what year your 6hp is, but you have to put the fuel connector on mine just so. If you don't hear the snap of the latch, it isn't on. Then it'll fall off for sure. For some reason, if I put it on with my right hand, it doesn't latch. If I use my left, it goes on just fine. Go figure. Listen for the little snap when the latch engages.

Hi guys,
I went out and had another look. The male connector on the outboard is metal, I suspect OMC, and the female end with the o ring that is connected to the fuel line and tank is plastic, perhaps aftermarket?
Do you think the female end is most likely to be the problem?
And finally do you think this could could be the cause of my problem, with the over revving before dying?

Yes - Replace female connector.

evinrude/johnson and suzuki look alike but, suzuki won't fit properly.

All of the hose end connectors are plastic. The hole where the barb goes in yours looks oversize (??). Does it fit the barb or does it wobble around on there? Easy enough to just get a new one. As said make sure you get the Evinrude/Johnson one.

Overrevving can be it is leaning out before dying. Rick

Thankseveyone for your help. I am going to go with the replacement connector as you suggest.
Does leaning mean it is getting too much air?

Too much air, too little gas. Same thing.
