Re: Fuel consumption...

A very rough rule of thumb is horsepower/10 = WOT fuel burn per hour. In your case, 320 hp = 32 gallons per hour worse case. (yikes!)
You think that's bad, by that calculation I'm around 55 gallons per hour WOT  and only 45mph.

Re: Fuel consumption...

Some gauges read "E" with 20 gallons left or with 5 gallons left. In other words, "E" has an error range that could be 5-10 gallons. Don't use the gauge to measure anything.

I guess you could use the gas pump. You fill the tank. You use the boat. You go back and fill the tank. You see it took 40 gallons. Then you do the math based on the last trip. The more you do this, the more it means.

Great advice and resources guys. I appreciate it! For my style of boating I highly doubt that killing a tank a weekend will be the norm. And most of you were really helpful given the info you had to work with.

plus is your seedoo a jet boat?? i think it is and i also think they use more fuel than a propped boat all other things being equall

Ug, bad memories!

We had a 1996 Sea Ray F-16 with the Merc 120 Sport Jet for 2 years- Even though it is a different animal, for a gutless engine, it had the WORST fuel econony of ANY boat I've ever opperated!

Re: Fuel consumption...

Jet drives are hard on the fuel tank. Sorry.

30 years ago, yes, today, that is no longer true. jets are as good if not better... There is tons of myths floating around because of the reputation the big block/berkely jet boats got. Those things sucked fuel as fast as they sucked in water! Here are some cold hard documented facts...

two random boats, yamaha 21' with dual 1000 cc engines. best cruise is 3.98 mpg at 31 mph. WOT is 2.84 mpg at 47 mph. The other boat is a chaparral 21' with a 270 hp 5.0. best cruise is 3.76 at 29 mph, WOT is 52.4 at 2.45 mpg (and yes, the jet boat is a little over 400 pounds lighter, but I suspect there probably is 400 pounds difference in the drive train/engine)

The jet boat is better at both cruise speed and also WOT, even with twin engines.

Edit: I fixed the link as it was to the wrong Yammie and the numbers above were off a little, so I changed those too. Let me know if I made it worse  - QC
