Preparing to venture offshore with my 350 Vortec....

Have never calculated (or really even noticed) the fuel consumtion of my rig. Honestly, up to this point, haven't had the need to!

Anyway, does anyone have an educated estimate of much fuel I might burn at let's say 3400RPM?

I really have no idea........

Re: Fuel Consumption

An average may be in the neighborhood of 1.3 to 1.5 miles per gallon.
But I sure wouldn't head off shore with that estimate.
Figure your actual milage, then figure 1/3 to the destination, 1/3 to return, that last 1/3 is for Murrphy.

Re: Fuel Consumption

Hey Don........

So if I estimated conervatively at 1.0mpg, I would only burn 15 gals going 15 miles offshore, 30 gals round trip. I have a 95 gal tank........so I should be good to go!

Hey, I don't want a "You Said" type post when you see the bill from SeaTow..... or worse.

Personally, I would NEVER go 30 miles off shore in any boat that I didn't know EXACTLY how much fuel it used at certain rpms and loads. I would also have a kicker installed on my 27' boat in case the main or drive goes south on me. May not be fast, but may be able to get me home.

Running strong........not jumping 15mi offshore yet......still gaining confidence.

Went off ~3mi a last w/e......no problems. Engine handled nicely in 3-4ft swells.

Don, after all we have been through......do you really think I would author a "You Said" post? I think not!

Nope, not at all, but too many other people read these threads and want to take everything said as gospel because they have something similar.

Re: Fuel Consumption

for how much fuel consumption gauges are, its a cheap investment. and before i go anywhere in any boat, i get the 140$ membership for the year. last time we ran out of gas, we were only 2 miles away from port. they told my buddie that "yep we can bring 10$ a gallon gas to you for 875$" so itwould of costed us 925$ for them to bring us gas. we rowed into port. i dont think youll be rowin that boat!!! i wouldnt want to see a bill from the coast gaurd!!!

Re: Fuel Consumption

The fuel consumption rule I have heard is to multiply your HP by 10% and that gives you the GPH at maximum consumption. At crusing speed its a little less than 1/2 of that. You'll need to do the math to convert to MPH. Stick with Don's 1/3 rule and be conservative about it. We all know that Murphy LOVES to go boating!!!

Re: Fuel Consumption

I find that i burn 5 gallons and hour :) the problem is i burn 5 gallons and hour at 25 MPH when its nice and 5 gallons hour and at 7 MPH when its really rough :(

Which puts my range between 40 and 150 miles

tommays
