1978 L6 165 with 165 merc outdrive, was running wot fuel was low, all of a sudden engine boged down like it was running outa gas ,i slowed down to idle speed a few seconds put it to her again nose stands up almost to plane and same thing happens this continued untill finally she would just run at an idle , then would start back up but would die right out, outa gas right? well got towed back to marina ,got home put gas in her ran fine . but gas gauge read between 1/4 and 1/2 tank ,tank is 24 gallons i put 6 gallons in her. that should had only gave me 1/4 tank ,so i had gas still in tank so what would cause this problem .24gallons should give me about how many nautical miles ?i have noticed slight mph lately like 5mph . fuel millage is terrible . thanks. george

Re: fuel consumtion

Before you go and analyze this too much, keep in mind that marine fuel gauges are notoriously innaccurate.

Re: fuel consumtion

yes this is very true but i used 30 gallons of gas in a 52 mile run that does not seem normal to me , i checked plugs for fouling , all is good there, motor does not miss ,what do you guys think , thanks

I only wish I got that gas milage;) From the numbers your saying that dont sound bad.... there could be tons of reasons why you are getting poor milage if you truely are, weight, water conditions, weather etc can take a major toll on consumption, I run about the same routine everytime im out and with a full tank every time and my numbers are always off sometimes by alot. ,as far as the bogging etc. Did you check for water in the fuel. replace fuel filters etc???? I would not jump to the carb yet. Start from the bottom up. Your fuel was getting low maybe you sucked some crud and water.

In your post are you saying you went around 52 miles WOT..LOL If I did that I would need a tow back to the docks also :)(if so thats your problem) or do I need to clean my glasses:D
