Fuel containers

I am looking for a kit that would turn a plastic gas can into a fuel tank for my out board. Has anyone come across something like that? Probably easy to make but if factory made may be cheaper and less hassle.

Usually fuel containers and fuel tanks are certified. This makes sure they are of the proper material and thickness and have the proper configuration and fittings, filling, supply and vent.

If there is someone selling fittings to turn a plastic jug in to a fuel tank they are open to unbelievable liability.

May I ask why ????
Portable tanks have a much lower centre of gravity and will not fall over anywhere near as easily. Therefore safer in my opinion.
Just my thoughts though.

Those gasoline containers that you find in the auto parts stores, walmart, etc. are for transporting and storing fuel. They aren't for bouncing around in a boat. As mentioned, a certified fuel tank's material and construction are critical.

Modifying a plastic storage container to try and serve the same purpose would be a very, very dangerous thing to do.

Those gasoline containers that you find in the auto parts stores, walmart, etc. are for transporting and storing fuel. They aren't for bouncing around in a boat. As mentioned, a certified fuel tank's material and construction are critical.

Well I always carry a 5 (imperial) gallon spare plastic container with me. It is stored very securely though. Just would not use it as an actual tank.

First you say that you are looking for a conversion kit, then later you say you wouldn't actually use it as a tank--Why don't I believe that?

You are literally playing with fire! Mishandled, the potential explosive energy in a gallon of gasoline is well more than a stick of dynamite. Here is a case where going with accepted practice is WELL worth the safety.

Even I, who is admittedly tighter than a crab's A**, (and that's water tight), would not try to save time or money jerry-rigging a fuel system.

Ken, the tank is made from plastic that is much thicker

I also keep a 5 gallon container of gas on board at all times. When these containers are closed/sealed properly and secured in place they are perfectly safe to keep on board a boat.

I agree that one should not be used as a fuel tank unless the fitting has been approved for that specific use by a government level safety standards body.

Plus they make small portable boat tanks in about every size and shape imaginable....

Yes sombody makes a cap with a dip tube to go on a 5 gal jerry can , I remember seeing it somewhere in a magazine but I cant remember where. To all you nay sayers, a jerry can is a certified fuel tank

That,s what i am trying to avoid is having it on the floor. I want it to stand up and they don't make a marine fuel tank that stands up.Most marine tanks are made for small boats so the tank can slide under the seat. It will be secured so it wont move.
I am trying to get away from having fuel sitting in my boat fuel tank. This way less chance of fuel spoilage. As a rule my boat gets fantastic fuel mileage with short trips we just don,t use that much fuel. I might get a marine tank and re rout the fuel pickup.

Do you keep conditioner in with the fuel in the tank all the time ???

yup just don't want to keep a bunch of fuel on board my boat. I also have to mix my fuel(don't have oil injection or a 4 stroke). It just seems like a wast to have it just sit there plus I use the same mix in my generator. Its no big deal for me to mix up a new batch when I need it.
