Hey everyone,
Again, this is my first boat and first year owning it. I am in the process of changing out your basic parts to do yearly maintenance on it (oil, fuel filter, spark plugs etc). I have ridden on it about 7-8 times prior to my recent fuel filter change. I went to West Marine to buy a replacement fuel filter but they were out of stock. I called another local shop, but he said I'd need to bring it in to match it. I took my old filter off which had no markings on it (brown dented to hell and old), and I took it to my local shop. He matched it with a "Sierra 7789" filter but also didn't have it in stock, but could get it by the end of day. 6 hours later, all the while my fuel filter was off my boat, I head back to put the new one on. I fill it full of gas to prime it, and oil lube the o-ring. I spilled some of the fuel (1/4-1/2 cup) into my catch pan while I was installing it on the boat. I turned the key 3 times pausing 15 seconds or so between turns to fill it the rest of the way. Finally I start the boat and after a unusually long crank it starts. Previously it takes <6 seconds to start, this time it took about 12-15.
I took it out on the lake today and it started surging any any RPM. It didn't always happen, and when it surged it dropped 50-100 RPM and I could hear the motor pitch change. When it surged it happened for 20-30 seconds at a time, then it would speed back up for another 20-30 seconds. I noticed it much more around 3000 rpm than at other rpm. Prior to my filter change I don't recall the boat surging at all.
Did I screw something up? I saw the fuel test sticky, but maybe since I'm new I just over looked something?
When I dumped the old filter into a gallon bag I managed to get a bunch of engine dirt into the bag as well, so I'm not sure if the filter was dirty or not. There was no water in there.
