Fuel Filter Empty

Johnson 40 HP 1989<br /><br />Fuel Filter never fills to top.<br /><br />Squeezing the Fuel Line Bulb raises level in filter with motor running but then emptys out.<br /><br />VRO Pump has bee bypassed and oil inlet plugged and alarm circuit disconnected.<br /><br />Engine idles O.K.<br /><br />Engine starts and idles on one cylinder with either spark plug pulled off.<br /><br />Boat will run at 4500 RPM (32 MPH) but must squeeze the Fuel line primer or depress the electric primer in order to maintain that RPM.<br /><br />Suspect pump or carberetors. Which should I do first.<br /><br />How can I test the pump?<br /><br />I have a SELOC Manual but it does not give information on testing VRO Type pump.<br /><br />Any advice would be greatly appreciated.<br /><br />Thank you; <br /><br />Gerry Smith

Why this happens is behond me, but you have NO problem, You can fill the filter with fuel even before you put it on, and in a few hours, it will only be about half full or less. I dont get it either.

First, check that fuel tank is venting...gotta vent to get fuel at WOT.<br />If that doesn't work, obviously a fuel starvation/restriction. Check all hoses for cracks, leaks, etc. The o-ring on the fuel connector at the engine can cause simular issues if bad.<br />Fuel pump O/H, not a bad idea if it hasn't been done in the last 4 or 5 years.<br />You can "T" in a pressure gauge to the fuel line, but we must have the values at specific RPMs to gain any diagnostics.<br /><br />EDIT: the fuel filters usually only fill to the point fuel will flow on down-line, they don't normally "fill" completely..maybe half-full.<br />Make sure ALL clamps are tight through-out the fuel system, air pulls much easier than fuel.

iBoars Parts Finder indicates 18-7822 Fuel Pump Kit works for 1988-1989 40 HP Johnson.<br /><br />Did all 40 HP Johnson Engines for those two years use VRO Pumps or did some use standard fuel pumps?
