fuel filter question

In my reading of my Seloc repair manual, I came across some info on fuel filters. They recomend getting a fuel filter that has a water seperator on it, if your engine does not already have it. How can I tell if mine has one? Are they really all that important? Seloc makes them sound nice, because you would have less contaments in the combustion. Oh yeah, I own a 86 Crestliner with a 4.3L chevy and an OMC cobra outdrive. What do you think? One more thing, I have not started to search yet, but where are good places to find engine parts? Here? I am not a huge Ebayked fan, I have heard of a lot of screw jobs.

Thanks again all!

Re: fuel filter question

Steve your 86 Crestliner problably doenst have the water sep fuel filter. My 84 17 foot crestliner had a 115 Hp outboard.

I think you problably just have an inline fuel filter mounted closer to the tank. If you follow your fuel line you would problably see it. If your fuel line runs up to the engine area and there is an oil lookign filter right there thats your fuel / water sep filter.

You can get these type of parts here on i boats. Ive had really fast shipping and great service from these guys and totally recomend them.

PS it seems to me all MERCUISER motors that use the fuel / water sep filter use the same model!

Re: fuel filter question

If you do have one it should be mounted to the engine below the heads somewhere or maybe even in front of the engine and it will look like an oil filter. It will not be far from the fuel pump which if it is a mechanical pump then it should be on the left side of the block (as viewed from the front of the engine) at the front.

Hey, don't count ebay out! You got an old boat like I do and you're gonna need parts one day that aren't made anymore (especially OMC!) and the only place you're gonna find them is on the bay. I just had to replace my intake manifold and thermostat housing, both pieces not available anymore, and found them both for a pretty reasonable price on ebay.
You can get the fuel/water separator filter assembly at walmart or any marine store, pretty easy to install. Walmart carries lots of Merc/Quicksilver stuff, oils, lubes etc.

Where does the water end up in an fuel/water separator? My info is to change yearly, so I guess it must end up in the bottom of the canister.

Re: fuel filter question

I always buy Quicksilver fuel/water sep. filters from my local marina and they sey right on thebox "universal fuel filter/water seperator" so I guess as the previuos post says, they are all the same and mine looks like an oil filter too!

Ya I agree with liquidlew, I also have an omc and the best place to find parts is usually ebay. So far I havnt had a bad experiance with them. Another place with lots of omc stuff is www.crowleymarine.com . Go to the parts catalogue sections and you find your model, then look for whatever part you need
