Hi, what kind of fuel filter does my boat engine have now, does it look like a canister? where can I locate it? Is it possible to install a fuel filter/water separator to it? Any idea how much it will cost?

Re: Fuel filter

It is my experience that Sea Ray has been installing water seperating fuel filters on all of their boats for several years now. Yes, it is a cannister that looks very much like an oil filter. In some cases it is mounted to the front of the engine, in other cases it is mounted to or near the fuel tank.

Unless someone (SeaRay) has installed a water seperating fuel filter between the engine and the tank, you don't have one. Mercruiser did put a filter in the fuel pump and one in the carb, but they are not for water.
Yes, it's possible to add after market fuel filter/water seperators. Just make sure you get the correct kind. No clear bowls in the engine compartment.

Re: Fuel filter

Don S, I will get the dealer put it in when I take my boat in? Is it a big job and expensive (labor)? I think the water separtor is about $38 with the adaptor on top of the canister. Its made by QuickSilver. If using aftermarket parts/accessories, will Mercruiser void the warranty of the engine? Thanks.

NO, it won't void the warranty, and may even help if problems occur. Plus, it will save you lots of headachs from water getting into the system. The 3.0L engine is the only Mercruiser engine that doesn't come equiped with a water seperating fuel filter as standard equipment. Probably because that engine is used on so many entry level boats where and extra couple of dollars makes a big difference in the overall picture of the boat.

Riverwolf,

The Quicksilver brand is Mercs line of accessories and 'aftermarket' parts. They are 'genuine' parts.

Chris........
