My Johnson 60 hp 71 electric shift has been running like a clock and still does at slow speeds. However recently it started running for about 30 seconds at high speed then fadeing. If I continue to sqeeze the bulb by hand on the gas tank it will keep up speed.

I did the obvious, change gas lines from the tank, tried different tanks, replaced the fuel pump and looked for leaks.

I am now at a loss, last night I put carb cleaner into the motor but am not optimisitic. Any ideas where I could look for this problem?

Re: fuel flow challenge Johnson 60

When you squeeze the bulb you are becoming the fuel pump. That indicates the pump is weak, has a restriction back to the tank or a restriction forward.

You changed the pump, we assume with a new one, so youve eliminated the obvious. If its not a new one we're back to the obvious.

If its a new pump and still weak, the pulse line may be blocked. The pulse line is what causes the pump to work. If thats blocked it will cause the pump to be weak.

You switched fuel supply so that eliminates any restriction downstream.

That leaves us with the restriction upstream from the pump. The obvious is the fuel out side of the pump. Make sure there is nothing restricting the fuel flow under that cap. Then the outlet hose to the carbs. If thats clear then we need to look at the needle & seats in the carbs. Not likely since it was running unless it had been sitting and only ran a short time.

Doug...I would suspect a sticking carb float. I would clean and rebuild carbs.

Good Luck!
