fuel flow issue

I have a 1985 Johnson 90 HP out board that will not take fuel into the line where the fuel connector hooks.that prime ball works but the fuel just squirts out where it hook up.no fuel makes it the filter at all.is this a fuel pump issue or something obstructing where it makes a connection.

Sounds like the o ring in the hose connector is faulty. You can replace the O ring or just buy a new end. Best of luck. Rick.

Fuel squirts out where? At the tank or at the outboard??

Where is the filter located?

Is the arrow on the primer bulb pointing at the tank or at the outboard?

It was at the outboard.the o ring was bad and there was sum dried dirt obstructing it which I poked out with a piece of wire.I now have fuel flow and a running engine I just have to replace the impellar now.all and all I'm happy I payed $150 for a 74 skeeter with a 1985 Johnson 90 hp vro.

Also if anyone knows .I think I'm on to it but my hydraulic trim does not work unless I remove the relay and ad a jumper.does this mean the relay is bad?

Possible or you could have low oil.

Does it have some sort of low oil sensor to stop it from working at the toggle?

On my old boat and others I have been around if the oil level was too low it would only allow me to move the motor up. Thus allowing me acess to the fill plug. I can't say for certain that is your issue. What you can do is disconnect the wires on the switch and touch the hot to the appropriate wires to see if it indeed is a switch. I'm not sure which is which on a Johnson/Evinrude but the wires on a Merc are blue and green. So I would start by taking a test light to find the Hotwire then touch one of the other wires to it and see what happens. If the motor moves it's your switch. If it doesn't and the oil level is good then it's the relay. It is possible for both switches to crap out one could of been dead and the other died. The switch on the motor I believe is around $150, the one on the throttle was around $400. Mind you I'm giving you prices that were for a Merc because those are the ones I have replaced for a friend. So I'm going out on a limb and suggesting that they are likely similar in price.

Thanks.yea I'm not getting any power to the switch with a volt meter.it seems like the power goes into the relay but does not come back out.the switch is bad I know that and I tried to jump the wires at the switch but nothing.when I remove the relay and jump wires there only then do I get the pump working.

I have a lot going on right now.so today I am going to take the lower end off to remove the water pump.:/ any words of advice?

Put the shifter in NEUTRAL before dropping the lower unit, it will make things easier when putting it back on. If you can, have someone help you when putting the unit back on.
