Hey all
I got a 15 horse sears motor on my little duck boat. My problem is that when i
hook up the fuel line and prime it, everytime i sqeeze the ball the fuel comes
out of the carb. Whats causing this?? I have disconnected the fuel line and
started it(after about 10 pulls due to the flooding) and it runs fine. After
being started and shut off with no fuel line conected it will start on one pull
everytime, but when i reconnect the fuel line i see fuel coming out of the carb
and the motor stalls. Im just a stupid college student and dont know much
about a carberator or how they work. I checked the manual and saw that it has a
fuel bowl with a float assembly in it. Can someone give my any suggestions as
to what may be wrong or a quick overview of how the carb works? Also, do i need to be getting my parts from sears or will an outboard shop have them? Duck season
starts in a week, so i really didnt want to put it in the shop and where i WANT
to hunt i cant use my other boat.

thanks a lot
james

Re: Fuel flushes out carb

hello greenhead9. Think of your carb as a small toilet. It has a float and a valve which together stop the incoming flow of water when the desired level is achieved. What happens if the toilet valve sticks open and doesn't stop incoming flow when the proper level is reached? your ankles get wet...LoL. If the valve in the carb(alias 'needle and seat') sticks open (for a multitude of different reasons)fuel level will not be maintained to a proper height and the carb bowl will overflow. To make life simple, in most cases, if you disassemble the carb and clean the needle and seat, problem gone. Might be a good idea to let the dealer look at the float, needle and seat and render an opinion as to their useability. Remember....use the manual for procedures!!!!!!!! A bad repair can result in a fire!!
Parts are where you find them. Get on the phone. Up here, Napa, small-engine shops or dealers are the only choice. Dealers are worth the extra coin in some cases just for their free advice. Let us know how you make out duck huntin..

Fire is right. It happened to me from that.
Good thing a had the garden hose 5 feet away,or I woulda bought another boat for the guy!!
But before tearing the carb down, take the rachet handle, and gently tap the carb, whist and at the same time, squeezing the bulb. This will often be enough to unstick the needle. But run it for a while to make sure it doesn't re-occur. Usually, once you get them un-stuck, they will be fine, because the fresh fuel will "self-clean" the varnish in the needle.
BTW, good analogy about how it werks, Schematic :)

I like 12Footer's suggestion!
If you find that it was just gummed up, might be a good idea to use a fuel stabilizer just before storing her next time or maybe use an oil with stabilizer built-in. That should reduce the residue from re-occuring...
Go get some quaks!!
Hey!!! Those aren't Canadian mallards you're shooting are they!!!
 ;) ;) :p
