fuel gauge and sending unit

I installed a new faria fuel gauge and universal sending unit in my 1984 ranger 335v bass boat. when you turn on the ignition the gauge goes backward. it has about 12 gallons of fuel. what did i do wrong. thanks for any help

Turn the sending unit over. The part that has the wires to it and the float attached and screws onto the vertical support.

This one blows my mind. How do you install one upside down? Oh! Vertical mounting. How did you know it was a vertical mount? Must be different than all that I have seen that are horizontally mounted. Never knew of a vertical. Wouldn't they be susceptible to leaking?
