Fuel Gauge Issue

I've been adding several things to a '79 Glastron GT-150 my son gave me for my birthday a year ago.

I added a fuel tank but am having a problem with the gauge. The gauge illumination is wired to the running lights. But when I turn the running lights on, the fuel gauge goes to full. I can't see that anything wiring wise is out of order, but getting my 6'2" frame under there to look isn't easy.

I'm wondering if the gauge might be bad, but it seems to function OK except for telling me my tank is full whenever I turn the lights on.

Thanks,
Kent

Welcome to iboats!

Sounds like you have the gauge wired incorrectly. Look here.

Re: Fuel Gauge Issue

OK Nevermind

The gauge only has 4 terminals:
Ignition
Sender
Two terminals for the light

My son (who is smaller & much skinnier than me ;)) did the wiring under the dash, with me giving him wire by wire supervision from my director's seat. IIRC, he asked if it made a difference for the light which terminal was + and - for the light. I probably said probably not.

Apparently for a fuel gauge, it is possible to wire a light bulb backwards. If you do, the gauge will show full when you turn the lights on.

I'm better now.:D

Re: Fuel Gauge Issue

Yes it will because one of the two terminals for the light is not really correct. One terminal is for the light. The other is ground for both the gauge AND the light.
