I admit that I am not a terribly mechanically inclined fella, so anyone know why my fuel gauge would always read full? I have found out that when it reads 1/2 tank I am really on "E". So I guess you could say it is always reading a 1/2 tank more than reality. It is a normal gauge, not an electronic one. Lil' Help?

you will have to test the sender, it has nothing to do with the engine. its also possible the senders resistance is incompatible with the gauge.

Re: Fuel Gauge Problem 150 Yam. 4 stroke

Hi,
I have a Yamaha (F115) and the digital guages and in Speedometer guage the 8 segment fuel meter just does not work as intended. Probably the fuel sender in the tank that is not OK.
When it said I had 1/2 tank it was almost empty.
It has been like this since boat and outboard was new in 2003. I told the Yamaha dealer to correct it the first season but they was unable to figure out what was wrong. So I had no other choice than to buy a third party Fuel flow meter (I bought a Navman 3100 Fuel). Now I know how much fuel I have in the tank and also have it interfaced to my GPS so the Navman 3100 Fuel also shown Nautical mile/liter (or gal).

Hope you can fix your Yamaha fuel guage or fuel sender in the tank (or what might be the cause).

bo
its an easy fix normally. but you have to have the installation instructions for the guage as well as is it american standard, european standard or a yamaha sender as each has a different set of resistance values. american standard is about 33Ohms to about 235. the other 2 I cannot remember but they are different enough that if the correct guage or gauge dip switch settings are not used it wont read right.
after determining if the correct gauge/sender combo has been installed and the dip switches,if used, are set correctly the next step is to insure the float arm in the tank was installed properly.
be aware on the yamaha bar type gauge there is a delay built in so rapidy changing resistance will take several minutes to show up on the bars. this is to prevent scaling in seas.
its possible the inccorct float arm height or length was installed.
they say yamaha made some senders but I have never seen one in a built in tank.
the manufacturer of your tank is most likly not a part of the hull manufacturer or yamaha.
like most boats yours is made from generic parts purchased by a hull manufacturing plant.
luckily of the past 20 years more and more is being set as an industry standard.
fixing fuel guages is a basic part of a techs job and usually one of the easiest if the sender is accesible.

have you ever checked it on the trailer when it is sitting level my guage acts the same as yours frome the factory I think its the angle my boat sits in the water the bow is fairly high up with the big four stroke on the back if I get a couple of guys up front when im sitting still it reads pretty accurately I doubt it your sending unit probably just all the fuel sets at the back of the tank and gives you a false reading i also notice that when i slow down rather fast the guage dips to the actual reading for a second or two before stopping I just live with it and make sure I top it off it im headed off shore.

Re: Fuel Gauge Problem 150 Yam. 4 stroke

Hi,
Thanks rodbolt.
I will try to solve this. I think all components are compatible with each other since the boat builder Yamarin has a close cooperation with Yamaha (boat is pre rigged with Yamaha guages and control etc). YAMA(as in Yamaha)RIN is suppose to show this close connection to Yamaha. The tank is a custom made stainless steel tank for this boat with a fuel sender mounted about 1/3 of tank length seem from behind. I will take the fuel sender out and meausre resistance and also check the dip switch settings on Speedometer.
The fuel tank probably does not sit level when boat is in the water. The bow is slightly high. It is very difficult to add fuel with a fuel house (at sea gas station) if people sit on the bench at stern, they have to move to the bow in the front. Then the fuel find it's way easy into the tank. It is probably to little vertical distance between fuel tank and fuel filling bushing. I have noticed on newer boats they have moved the filling bushing to another higher position.
The tank installation is in other words not that good in my boat I think.
But I will try to fix the wrong reading on fuel meter myself since Yamaha dealer was not of much help.
