I bought a 1979 Terry bass boat and the fuel guage was disconnected for some reason. How do i go about wiring it back up? I have two wires off the top of my fuel tank - one on the top of the sending unit and one on a "L" bracket off to the side of the sending unit. The wires dont lead anywheres they are just clipped and rolled up under the seat. The fuel gauge itself has three pins on the back of it one says pos one says snrd the other says nothing. There are no wires currently hooked to the gauge. How do I wire this thing back up so I'm not stuck guessin on gas?? Thanks guys!!

Re: Fuel Gauge Wiring Help

You start by using the "search" function for "fuel gauge wiring", "fuel gauge problems" or similar terms. You will find well over 50 posts for fuel gauge issues, most of them dealing with your exact problem. The same applies for any other boating issue. Search first. The answer is generally already available -- no waiting. By the way -- this is an educational comment and a suggestion -- not a demand. The answer to your questions is this: The gauge requires +12 volts when the key is on (hence the POS terminal). It requires a connection to the sender in the fuel tank (hence the SND, S, or SEND markings on that terminal). It also requires a ground connection which is either marked with a G or a ground symbol. The gauge should also have an internal light that requires a connection to the NAV/ANCHOR switch. POS, NEG, and Light can all be connected to the same terminals on any other gauge. Send goes to the sender in the tank. The metal shell of the sender also needs to be grounded. The NEG terminal of the battery is the ground point. Here is the diagram -- again.
