fuel guage not working

hi i have a 17 ft boat i just purchased the fuel guage does not work wondering if it is wired correctly.they have a ground from the tank to the battery and then to a switch on the dash and the positive from the tank to the battery and then to the guage on the dash.theres power at the guage cause the light works but the ground gets really hot..dont know much about wiring ...so hope someone can simplfy this for me ..thanks

oh the fuel gauge is not run by turning the key it is turned on by pulling the switch but doesnt work

Then there should be a ground going to the sender in the tank.

Your wiring sounds like it's completely wrong. This diagram has been posted in this forum umpteen times, courtesy of member Silvertip:

Note that the positive battery feed does NOT go to the sender at all.
