I had a slightly leaking sending unit gasket, which I replaced. No problem. Now, I get no reading at the guage, and I CAN'T FIGURE IT OUT! I put the unit in exactly as it was, all connections are good, plenty of battery power. I have family coming in for a big fishing outing, and I'm freaking out! Any assistance would be appreciated. It's a Todd tank, with the stock sending unit. Thanks.

Re: Fuel Guage Sending Unit Not Working - Help!

Quick update: I ran to West Marine and got another sending unit. This did not fix the problem. I'm getting full voltage to the sending unit. The ground is fine, with a complete circuit. When I turn the key on, there is slight movement at the guage, but it goes past Empty (backwards), almost like reversed polarity. I did a quick guage check, and it's fine. Is there a switch or something I could have bumped on the old sending unit? I don't understand what went wrong. Everything worked FINE until I replaced the gasket! Any ideas?

It's either a short, or the guage is shot.

Re: Fuel Guage Sending Unit Not Working - Help!

Problem found. There is a metal connector that had broken loose at the sending unit (part that goes inside the tank). After letting the unit dry off, and a few spritzes of water, I soldered it back together. It works fine now. Every time I try these last-second repairs before major trips, I'll never know. Thanks for your advice.

By the way, I would never had found the problem if I hadn't worked through the process of elimination. I was able to get it narrowed to the sending unit, inner workings.

Bryan,

Glad you found it. That was your short. That tab is actiually insulated from the tank.

Go catch some fish.
