Is there any special sealers that I can use to attach fuel filler line to filler cap, both on inside and outside.I can not use clamps to seal inside because there is no room to tighten them,on the outside I was going to use 5200 to hold every thing in place because I can not get a fastener on the back of the hold down screws. Will the 5200 be strong enough to hold everything in place? Thanks for the help!!

Re: fuel hose attachment

Do you mean to actually attach the filler hose to the deck fitting? I'm thinking you definitely want a mechanical fastener of some kind for safety. Something designed specifically for securing fuel lines (as opposed to el-cheapo hardware store grade hose clamps). An other issue might be gasoline vapour degrading the sealant over time.

How was the previous hose fastened -- or is this a project you're building?

I don't think any kind of sealer will hold to or seal a rubber fuel line.

Can you install the hose to the cap with band clamps or tie wraps and then slide it into the hole in the hull? You need something mechanical. Skip the sealer, it will only gum up the fuel tank.

Re: fuel hose attachment

Thanks for help!Im replaceing all old fuel lines because I had a strong fuel smell in center console after outing. The original(?)filler cap was chrome plated zinc which had a crack plus no ground wire so I took it off actually it broke off into pieces. There is no way that I can see to get hoe clamps on from under gunale(no room),I was thinking of putting hose on cap and feeding down from top, although there is no room for clamps that way either so I thought may be a sealer(that old tar like gasket maker).?????????

Micel, Usually the're is enought room between the hose area of the fill and the flange to hold a camp. They are designed that way. It sounds like the hole in the hull is too small. Make it a 1/2" larger, and the clamps should pass thru.

Alternatively, you may be acle to get band clamps that are 1/32" thick at most.

Re: fuel hose attachment

There is not enough room to get my hand up there to attach hose to cap,I cant even see it from bottom, not even with a mirror.I guess the only choice I have is putting it in from top,but then what do I attach filler cap to gunel with 5200?Whats a band clamp?

Re: fuel hose attachment

Could you not make the opening in the deck a little larger with a hole saw, just enough so that something like this could be fitted to the fuel hose, clamped properly and dropped into place. To get yourself some extra clearance cut off the exposed ends of the clamp screws.

Then just fasten with the three screws through the flange.

If your using a metal fuel fill it has to be grounded.

You may have to cut an access hole near the fuel fill then install one of these deck plates to cover the hole. This is a common practice for accessing inaccessible areas of boats.

Re: fuel hose attachment

Thanks!I just purchased a #316 s.s.one with a pop-up center latch,no key.Now I still have to address the screw issue,do I just attach screws that attach filler cap to gunnel buy filling old screw holes with 4200 and push throuh gunnel, when that dries it will be strong enough to securely hold it in place? The fuel hose to tank will not have any slack in it,so its not going to be able to go too far. This way just does not sound too secure!

Very good point from dingbat about stainless. I'm 500 miles from the nearest salt water so it never really figures in my thinking :)

Anyway, I'd still want to fasten that with stainless screws into fresh deck if I could.
