Re: Fuel Injected Tohatsu or Carbureted Yamaha?

Evinrude is, as of now, out of the running. The quote I got is $900 more than the Yamaha and $500 more than the Tohatsu (already a stretch for the budget) Plus it does not come in a short shaft model.

Their web site says they most certainly DO come in short shaft, and I know for a fact they did in 2013. Maybe your dealer just told you that because he didn't have one and didn't want to bother to order one. He should be able to do better on a factory order because he won't have to float a loan to get it.

$900 seems like nothing compared to the price of the motor. If you want cheep why don't you just buy a used one?

Not for the remote models. I got the same info from their website, and 2 local dealers.

$900 IS a lot of money, %23 in fact. Enough to finish off the rest of the parts needed for the restoration

That is my position, I am not the one cutting the check.

If you do want the Yamaha, you can use it by incorporating a jack plate on the back of your boat. We buy one particular Zodiac model boat with the Yamaha 25 on the back that comes to us that way directly from Zodiac. It looks a little odd, but it is perfectly functional.

Tohatsu. For ease of use, I prefer fuel injected.....though I can already hear the iboats carb crew sharpening their knives.

Just bought a Tohatsu/Nissan Marine15hp 4stroke. Couldn't be happier with it. First crank it starts every time. I'm a big Tohatsu fan and if you do some research most small outboards are Tohatsu but with a Merc sticker for example. Honda has teamed up with Tohatsu in the bigger displacement outboards this year. Can't go wrong with a Tohstsu :)

Just so you youngsters know, 170 HP was not the top power package for a '57 Chevy. They were available with fuel injection to the tune of 283 HP from 283 CI. Pretty advanced for the day since there were no electronic distributors, knock sensors, O2 sensors, ECMs, etc., to provide the tuning benefits we have today. That little 283 went up to 315 HP from the factory in the early 60's.
