Re: Fuel Issues with Marina Boats

I fill up at the marine when I can. If I am going on a trip and I know that I will burn a tank of gas or most of it I will fill up at the pump. When I put the boat away for the winter I fill it up at the marina and add stabilizer

As for paying for gas I have a few rules:
1. If you are a guest than I don't expect gas money it would be nice if you brought beer or food though.
2. If you are a regular than I will accept your gas money
3. If the trip is your idea (Lets have a guy weekend on the boat it Wilmington) than we are all splitting the fuel including towing fuel.
4. If you ask to come out on the boat because you are thinking of getting one then you are treated as a guest, I'll even buy the beer.
5. If you ask to come out on the boat because you are too lazy to fix yours then you are paying for some fuel.

Re: Fuel Issues with Marina Boats

One problem with some marina gas is that it contains water, more than gas station gas, due to (duh) tanks being close to the water and also a longer run from the tank to the pump. They may have an older system.

Also a large boat that has run non-ethanol for years may have a layer or water settled at the bottom of the tank. Accidentally add E10 and the ethanol brings that water into the mix, stopping the boat a few miles out from the fuel dock. Or so I've heard.

Maybe I am lucky but I have never had fuel issues. I try to put good fuel in and follow the rules but I have let my boat sit for 6 months with 1/4 tank of gas and it fired right up. I have put in gettoh pump gas, marina gas, and name brand (exon etc) pump gas and have never had fuel issues. Perhaps older boats or non MIP boats are more prone to having issues with fuel. With that said I do change the fuel filter before lay up every year.
