On my 1974 115 Evinrude I got the choke working fine by changing out the spring. Original problem was Butterflys were not holding tight while choking. Spring had stretch to much.

I noticed while priming the bulb that it built pressure and at one point with the pressure built as I squeezed it released as though a valve had opened. With one additional squeeze presure was back and motor fired. There are no leaks visible and bulb is new, tried two different ones. Is there anything between the carbs and the line that may be sticking? There is a filter (stock)that splits the lines to each carb. It looks clean. I did notice a diaphram of some sort within the assembly that the screw threads into. Not sure how or what it is supposed to do.
Motor does start and run fine. Wondering if there is somthing sticking that could be adding to initial stsrting problem.

Could be floats in one of the Carbs is sticking open. when it does it, tap gently on the float bowls and see if that stops it. If so, time to rebuild the Carbs, which is fairly easy with a rebuild kit. Good Luck,

Re: Fuel line bulb pressure

Thanks Rick, I'll try tapping on the bowl to see if it makes a difference. The carbs were just rebuilt In June and have about 10 to 12 hrs since on them. Hard starting has been my battle all season with this motor. It has improved with different things that I have reviewed through this web site, the info is great. Once it starts it will run all day and always restart until I let it sit for a day.

Good thing is that over the winter I am replacing it with a newer 150 Johnson that I worked a deal on.

Another thought is the check valve in the pressure bulb didn't check and let the built-up pressure back to the fuel tank.

c/6

Hooty

Pst76,

After re-reading your posts, you said you did some work on your choke. You also said it runs great all day AFTER you get it started cold. Makes me think that that choke still has problems! Next time try using the manual choke lever (Turn Red Lever on Carb 90 Degrees) and try to start it.(do not choke at control unit when doing this)If it goes, you still have a problem with the electric choke! Just a thought! Let us know what happens!

Re: Fuel line bulb pressure

Rick, original problem I found with choke was that with switch engaged coil would pull down tight. putting tension on the spring and pulling the Butterflys closed. As soon as I would crank the engine Butterflys would flutter allowing air past the chokes. I had lowered the coil to add more tension on spring but still not enough. What I did last night was replace with a stronger spring, seems to have taken the flutter out and when disengaged choke opens full. First thing I noticed with spring changed was that when turning over you could smell fuel exhaust where as before initially it would not. Motor actually flooded on first attempt last night. I let it sit for 10 min and hit the key and started right up without choking. I ran out of daylight last night and will try again tonight. All may be working now and I just need to get the sequence down. Standard procedure I use is prime bulb, hit choke switch, raise start lever and crank the key. Should I crank a bit prior to hitting the choke? Thanks

Re: Fuel line bulb pressure

Rick, one other question, the gas line feeds into a square filter assembly mounted to the motor. The block has a screen in it as well as what looks like a diaphram. When you tighten the cover of the assembly it pulls the diaphram toward the screw. How does this unit work or what is its function?

Thanks again

Re: Fuel line bulb pressure

The screen is a fuel filter, the diaphram is the fuel pump diaphram. Pulling toward the screw is something I have not seen before. You should just put the cover on and tighten it down! And last, you should: Prime with the bulb, raise fast idle lever about half way, turn key to ON and push key for count of 5-10 Sec. and then turn to Start. Hope this helps!

Re: Fuel line bulb pressure

The 1974 has a choke, not a primer. Unfortunately the trick of holding the key in before engaging the starter will not work. A primer system can be added though.
