fuel line confusion

I'm doing some major TLC on my "68" merc 650 and want to replace the fuel lines with retrofitted hose barbs and line ,but was size fuel line does it take,some searches i've done reveal 5/16 line but i can only fit a 1/4 drill bit into my original line,i also went to napa and looked at the 5/16 line and i'll say i don't think i can fit all in the motor cause the OD of the line is huge,could i use clear poly line like on my snowmobiles?<br /><br /> PROPWASH.

Don't use poly lines for fuel. They will eventually hardend and crack. There are special purpose gas lines made from urethane. They are transluscent not clear, thin walled, very flexible, won't kink unless severely bent and will not degrade when exposed to gas. Most small engine repair shops have a variety of sizes.

I can't see it making a difference at either 1/4" or 5/16". Really, if you think about the volume of gas travelling through the lines at any instant in time it is very small. If you are not sure, go to the 5/16 urethane thin walled line. Don't forget, the biggest flow restriction will be the fittings not the hose.
