I have a 96 johnson 112hp. I pump my primer ball until its hard and start the motor and it runs for a while, then stalls and the ball is soft. If I pump the ball once in a while it stays running. Fuel filter looks clean and fuel line and primer ball look good too.

Does anyone know how to check the fuel pump?? and our there any other ideas that could help me??

THANK YOU

Re: Fuel line will not stay primed

Hello,
I had about the same thing one time. I thought about the fuel pump, fuel lines etc. Come to find out I replaced the primer bulb and corrected problem. Seems like it had small dry rot cracks all through it. Now I change them new each spring. Costs a few bucks, but keep the ones I take off in the a bag on the rig just in case I have any trouble out on the water. Hope that this helps.

Another common problen is air getting sucked in somewhere, check all connections.

SoLittle is on the money..

Should check for hissing sounds when you squeeze the bulb.. This will show leaking connections

If so its time for new cables/bulb unless the old ones are alrite then you can cut 1-2cm off the connection where the cracks usually are and just re connect them

Re: Fuel line will not stay primed

The bulb is not supposed to stay hard...

You pump it up anf it primes your fuel systems. There are two one-way valves in the bulb (intake & outlet) which makes it possible. Once the engine runs it SUCKS fuel from the tank. The fuel hose between the engine and the bulb intake valve thus changes from pressure to vacuum levaing the bulb itself soft.

If your enginemounted pump cannot get sufficient fuel you add to it when you squeeze the bulb while running.

Some things possibly preventing the pump from working properly can be either air sucked into the hose (check hose - especially inside near fitting points: cut clean and refit), a weak pump or clogged filter(s) or hose.

Suppose you've already checked for leaks?
