Fuel Mixing Question

I have a brand new boat and of course a brand new motor. There are some strict break guidelines for like the first 10 hours of operation. For that period it says to also mix the fuel itself 50:1. Should I just take a 5 gallon gas can to fill it up during this period? It has a 30 gallon tank and came from the dealer with about half a tank of fuel. In order to get the mix right I am thinking this is the best way. Does this sound right? Sorry for the silly questions but all this is new to me and I am trying to learn everything I can. The motor is a Yamaha 150 VMAX as info.

Re: Fuel Mixing Question

i would ask the dealer if the put mixed gas in the tank, they should have. if so just add the correct amount of oil for the gas you put into the tank.. then when you have the 10 hours on it you can burn the majority of the gas. the little oil left won't bother anything. better more oil than not enough. if i'm putting 10 gal in i like to put my oil in first, that way it gets washed down the filler tube.

Re: Fuel Mixing Question

Certainly it's oil injected -- but the engine doesn't know it's being broken in, hence it requires extra oil. The only way to do that is add the extra oil to fuel. By the way Emmitt -- 50:1 is a pint in 6 gallons. Not a pint in five gallons. The mix ratios are printed on the oil container label.

Re: Fuel Mixing Question

Thanks fellas. I was worried that with it being around a half a tank I would not know how much fuel I would be adding before hand. The manual says make sure the oil and fuel are thoroughly mixed. I did not know if it would be ok to add the fuel the pour the oil in. Also thanks for the mixing info. Was going to have to break out the calculator.

Re: Fuel Mixing Question

Studly yes it does mix itself. Where the fuel tank is located is also a container for the oil. However, the manual says to also manually mix fuel just during the break in period only. After that it is business as usual.
