I recently purchased a 1990 18ft Bayliner Capri and was wondering if anyone knows what the actual fuel capacity is and what the gas to oil mixture ratio is. It has a 90hp Force Ldrive Motor. Its a 3 cylinder 2 cycle motor. Thanks.

I am not sure what the mixture will be, but you need to call a dealer and they will tell you. Most have the same ratio, but the MOST IMPORTANT THING TO DO IS GET A HIGH QUALITY OIL!! NAME BRAND!! Watch your temp. with that Force engine, they have a rep. I have a 19ft and it has a twenty gallon with a 125hp that threw a rod last summer. Buy a fuel/water filter, it is worth the $30. Drain any old fuel out of the tank and get the Impeller replaced ASAP on it.

Mitch,

I'm fairly sure the 3 cyl is an 85 HP force head. My understanding is that ALL the force heads use a 50:1 mix. When the engine is new they run them rich at 25:1 for a breakin period.

I have a 125 Force outboard in my 18' Capri and it has a 28 gallon tank.

Keefbikes is absolutely correct in his advice... use name brand oil and make sure you're getting water to cool the engine. That head will overheat with as little as 10 seconds of no coolant but it will do just fine as long as you do the preventative maintenance.

Good Luck!

Most likey a 21 gallon tank and 50:1 is used. Any and I mean any TW3 oil will work however!

If you want smoke get the Walmart cheap stuff. If you want to breath get a synthetic oil in any brand.

I have a 120 L drive too. How do I get to the impeller? I can't get the lower unit to drop.

Thanks, Joe

Hello;

New Bayliner owner as well. Replacing an impellor. I have heard this advice more than once. Are they expensive? Is that a few hours work for a somewhat mechanical bloke or an all weekend deal? It will be on a 86 Force 125hp. On this motor there are two pee holes side by side just below the hood(shroud) and wonder just how much water should be spewing out when running. Thanks for any replies and sorry for jacking the thread. I do have a clymers manual.

Its an 85 or a 90, and it's 50:1 (oops, you already said it was a 90hp L drive)

Buy a manual, and the impeller is about $35. It's an easy 2 hour or so job for a backyard mechanic, but a manual is a must. There's one screw, that if you remove it by mistake, you will be in a world of trouble, and another 4 or 5 hours of work. Again, manual is a must!

Good Luck!

You may be interested in this thread about adding a telltale to the Force outboards. Probably work for the L drive motors too, just run the hose out the back and shoot the water in the air and you won't have to wonder if the impeller is pumping while you run WOT....

Great tips on the tell tale.. thank you. Sounds like a good thing to do along with the impellor swap. I am also glad to hear you found the construction of this brand of Boat and Motor better than expected. Here is an article that you all have probably read a thousand times but think of the incentive to build a good boat...
