Fuel mixture Question

I just bought an 82 glastron boat with an 82 johnson 140 v4. The boat was owned by the same man for 25 years. When he sold the boat to the next owner he told him he runs two pints per 6 gallons of gas. this is 25 to 1. Everyone i have talked to says this motor should be 50 to 1.(is that right) the owner before me said he mixed it at the 25 to 1 ratio because thats what the original owner did.
Should i continue to run it so rich or begin mixing it at 50 to 1. I dont want to mess up a good running motor.

Yes 50:1 for all 2 stroke Evinrudes and Johnsons since 1964. Look at the topic in the Engine FAQs board at http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=158072

You should also be using an 2 stroke outboard engine oil to TCW3 specification

thanks gentlemen,
I will go to 50 to one and maybe add just a little more oil to be on the safe side considering this motor has been run rich for so many years.

does this sound like a good idea?

Actually running it rich like that can do it more harm than good. It increases the chances of fowling plugs and gumming up the engine with unburned oil deposits. 50:1 and add some Seafoam gas treatment in the fuel.

I cannot see that is any justification. I would change to 50:1. Add the Seafoam as suggested perhaps. It seems to be the magic additive in the US!
