Does anyone know what fuel mixture to run in a 1969 sea king 6hp ***AND*** a 1972-1976 clinton air cooled 5hp? I thought i would run 40:1 in the 6hp since it may have bronze sleeve bearings but i don't know? And i don't know if 50:1 would be healty in the air cooled 5hp?

Re: Fuel Mixture

I think 50:1 would be okay in the Sea King if it has a model number starting in GG, Styles. That would prove it was made by Gale, a division of OMC. OMC okayed 50:1 for all OMC-made engines after 1964.

In the Clinton, I don't know the correct mix for sure, but I would be sure to run only chainsaw or weedwhacker oil, not TC-W3. I would try 40:1 and watch carefully for any overheat. If it overheated I would use 24:1.

Re: Fuel Mixture

Gale (GG) quit building engines after 1963.

For the Clinton, the book says 1/2 pint per gallon for a new motor and 1/4 pint per gallon thereafter. But danged if I would cut it that thin. As chainsaws the same powerhead ran 1/2 pint. You decide.

Re: Fuel Mixture

I believe the 6 hp would be Chrysler built. Demensions check.I was surprised to find in 2 service manuals that they are rated at 24:1 and they do use bushings at the wrist pin and center and lower mains.
Some Clinton 5s use 16:1 others use 48:1 Model number would help pin it down.

Re: Fuel Mixture

Okay.....50:1 if its a GG but since its a VWB would you still run 50:1 in the Sea King? Sorry i didn't throw that model number in there....Since i'm a strict amsoil guy i WAS going to run 40:1 amsoil hp injector (recommended for TC-W3, API-TC) in the Clinton. If i understood you guys right this would be a bad choice?

Re: Fuel Mixture

Not sure I follow your question.I wouldn't do 50 to 1 in the Chrysler built 6 hp.It is rated at 24:1 As far as the Clinton if it is a J500 or K500 you can run 48:1. Many reccomend Chain saw 2 stroke oil because of being air cooled. If your Amsoil is rated for chain saw use It should be ok.As far as the GG Gale didn't build motors after 63 so most would be 24:1 especially the small motors. The Gale 60 fat 4, 60 - 63 was 50:1.

Re: Fuel Mixture

Like i said the 6hp sea king is not a GG. Its a VWB299 (1969). The clinton is a K500 (1972-1976). If i'm following ya'll correctly the sea king should take 24:1??? And the clinton (being a k500) should take 48:1???

Re: Fuel Mixture

I'd probably just run 32:1 in both (4oz/gal). Outboard oil in the Chrysler and chainsaw oil in the Clinton. You might get some flack about using Amsoil which isn't TCW-3 endorsed, but frankly anythng you get now is better than what was around in 1969. Just don't buy into that 100:1 Amsoil bullschidt marketing crapola.

Re: Fuel Mixture

Amsoil HP synthetic is recommended for tc-w3 apps. Why wouldn't it be tc-w3 endorsed?

Re: Fuel Mixture

I am not familiar with Amsoil, but to answer the question if it is not endorsed and carry the NMMA logo it is because

1. They didn't submit it for testing

or

2. It failed the test

"Approved" is a meaningless word. Approved by whom?

Re: Fuel Mixture

I don't know about the Amsoil but you are right 48:1 in the K500 32:1 Is probably ok in the Sea King but keep in mind fuel mix is the life blood of your motor at 32:1 your not leaving much margin for error in mixing.
I accidently ran my 88 50hp Evinrude at 100:1 for almost a whole season until my son had a ski weekend and we lost the top piston. With my somewhat gentle use It probably would have run for sometime with no apparent problem had it not been for
the ski weekend. But failure was surely down the road.
I know the Evinrude 6 rated for 50:1 is noted for occasional premature failure. Some reccomend 40:1 as a safer mix.
