Fuel/Oil ratio and Cold Starting Procedure

I have an 1977 Evinrude 85HP.<br />Can anyone give me the correct fuel/oil ratio for this engine ?<br />Also, cold starting is a pain and the carb is flooding, wet plugs. What's the best procedure to start: flicking the elec choke while starting or should it be kept closed (rich fuel) and released after it fires up ?<br /><br />all help appreciated...

islandkiwi.....Your fuel/oil ratio is 50:1. If your carbs are flooding out of the front then you need to rebuild them, the engine will not start correctly if the fuel is spilling out of the front of the carbs. Try tapping on the carb bowls lightly with something, this will dislodge a stuck float if this is your problem, if this works you wiil need a carb rebuild. If you mean that the carbs are flooding the cylinders then check to see if you have a good strong spark on all cylinders. As for starting procedure, pump the fuel bulb up firm, turn the key on, push in for choke and while holding in, turn to start, keep the key pressed in until it starts, then release.
