On the outside of the boat. If fuel can flow out then why can't water get back in; ie rain and/or waves from other boats while tied up at a dock? Is there a check valve?

there is a very fine screen on it to stop flame from traveling into the tank

And they are generaly pointed down and well above the water line i guess if it was put in a bad place it would be possable

There are no check values. Most manufacturers will loop the vent hose up from the vent to help with the problem but water will still get in under the right conditions. I've seen lots of tries at remedies but none of them are fool proof. My tanks vent out from under cap on the fill port and even with that setup I?ve gotten some water in my tanks from time to time.

Install a good fuel filter/ water separator on your fuel system and your problems should be minimal

Thanks for the info. Ya mine is above the gas cap and still boats coming too close send water splashing all over it from time to time. I have a water/fuel filter that is changed once a year. Just about every month I check it for water. I didn't check it this month yet. Be nice if people would follow the boating laws.

I emptied the filter/water separator and there was no water. There is a L shaped connector going sideways to the hose. The hose goes down and level and then a little up to the tank. Any water that does get in must flow back out. I am going to quit worrying about it. lol Made me mad to think other law breaking boats were throwing water in my gas tank. 18 footer and it sits up a ways and the waves were still reaching it

Ayuh,............ Like Dingbat says,.......

It should loop Up from the Vent opening,+ then Down to the Tank.......
