i took my procraft, with a merc 2.5 efi out today for the first time this year. it ran good for about the first hour. but coming back down river, i was running at around 5k RPMs it started surging, i could back out of the throttle and it would do o.k. but then i got to wher it would only run for about 1 minute then it would cut down to a idle. well i noticed that my fuel bulb was sucked flat, so i knew it was a problem between the bulb and tank. i unscrewed my pick up tube out of the tank and the screen was clear. i put it back together and ran around 10 miles with no problem.so i an thinking something sucked against the pick up opening. my question is whats the best way to maybe clean debris out of a built in 40 gal tank ? and sorry for the long post.

Re: fuel pick up problems

I have little help as far as cleaning out a built in tank. I had similar engine problems that turned out to be a blocked fuel vent line. According to my Merc guy, a spider had some type of nest inside the vent line therefore no vent, flat primer bulb.

i found the problem. i drained all of the gas, and pulled the sending unit for access. in the bottom of the tank was one of the foil seals like off of the top od a bottle of carb cleaner, or gas treatment.but the real trick was getting it out of the tank. but with the help of a clothes hanger, a piece of string and some 5200 i came right out.

That is good news that you could get that out of there.
