Ive been having some issues with my evinrude intruder 150...seems like the first few hours are ok then it just spits and sputters at low rpms and wants to die....when it is neutral it will idle and rev up just fine may smoke a little but no hesitation...as soon as i put it in gear it wants to die. if i go pump the bulb and make it hard it will fire up and run fine for a few seconds then it dies down like its not getting gas! but will do fine in neutral! this only does it like 2-3 hours on the lake and gets hot outside(80 degees and up)

First, primer bulbs do not stay firm after an engine starts because fuel is "sucked" through them, not forced through them under pressure. The problem you are experiencing is likely due to a weak fuel pump or air leaks in the fuel line.

Re: Fuel Primer bulb wont stay hard! please help

why is it that it does just fine at first then seems like when the temp rises it starts to act up....maybe i will start off by replacing the fuel like....i will also mention the when i hook this thing up to some muffs it really smokes more than what it should...one more thing...my primer bulb on my oil injection tank is always SUPER hard is this normal??? thanks for your input

also it only does it under load! when in neutral it will idle and rev up great so how could it be a fuel pump.. only under load it acts up thanks again

Possible failing ignition system if it only happens when hot? When it spits and sputters squeeze the primer bulb and see if it cures the problem.

If it does, you have a problem in the fuel delivery system.

Things to check:
. air leak on pump suction side (bad clamp, cracked hose, cracked tank pickup tube, etc., etc.)
. malfunctioning anti-siphon valve
. plugged tank vent
. trash blocking tank pickup screen
. plugged fuel filter
. collapsed fuel line
. check fuel pump output by taking off outlet hose and cranking engine over (make sure it can't start). You should see long, strong pulses of fuel. If not, pump is bad.

What the motor does when not under load tells you almost nothing, other than it will run.

Their is no heavier load you can put on an engine than water. Depending on what you have (always a good idea to let us know) could be a pulse limiter, torn diaphram. Every service manual I have seen explains the necessity to be in the water under load, never on the trailer.

Basshunter0123 I just went through something very much like you describe with my 2001 Johnson 40 Comm. I found my problem to be a hairline crack in the 6 gal. fuel tank pick up tube. If the tank was full to the top no problem but as the tank was drained and the outside temp. rose the motor would die and surge from sucking a small amount of air. My bet is that you have a fuel line problem some where.

Just had the same issue with the pickup tube.. there was a flexible extension tube with a screen attached clamped to it. I had to remove the top of the fuel sending unit to get retrieve it. If you dig this far into it make sure you clean the top off because you will get alot of trash in the tank if you don't.

Was at the lake the other day with similar prob. Could only keep motor running by periodically squeezing bulb. Took hood off, and found cap on fuel filter canister was loose and sucking air. Sure was glad, cuz I thought "fishing is over for the day" before I found it.
