My 40 will not run right! I had carbs rebuilt, a new fuel pump, did not help. My fuel primer could be the problem? There is no fire going to it.Should it have fire when ignition is switched on? Where does wire connect? What direction should the red switch be in? This is my first experience with a fuel primer.Could this cause my problems? Would this motor run without a fuel primer? thanks, Sam

When you say there is no fire, do you mean that the primer is not clicking. The way you get it to click is to turn the key to the accessory position and then push it in. When you push the key in you are activating the primer and giving the motor additional fuel to start. You are suppose to pump the fuel bulb and then push in the key during a cold start.

The normal position is for the red handle to be turned back over the black solenoid. If you turn it the other way where the red handle is pointing away from the solenoid, then the primer is always on. You are in this latter mode when you battery is dead and you need to pull start the motor. If you keep the primer in this latter mode, the motor will never idle right because you are supply too much fuel.

Primer Solenoid
the primer replaced the old choke butterflies in the carborators, pushing in the key activates it, like the old choke plates, but injects fuel directly into the intake.
The red handle is used when your battery is dead, and you have to rope start. You move the handle 180 degrees.
Normal operating position is with the handle back over the body of the solenoid, like in the picture below.
