fuel problem?

Ok now that I got the choke settings info, I gave her a shot at starting. I pumped the bulb intil firm, put her in neutral with a little up on the throttle and turned the key. I had pulled the cover off the engine and the cover plate off the carbs to see if the electric choke was working. It didn't do anything when I tried to start it. So I let her crank for a few seconds, turned off the ignition switch and repeated a couple of times. The electronic choke didn't close the plates, twitch, nothing. So I pulled the manual switch all the way out (she was in the middle setting which is supposed to be correct for the electric choke) and cranked a few times and the engine would start.
So I turned off the ignition switch, turned off battery power and pulled a plug and it was dry. So I am wondering if I have a blocked fuel line, or the crabs are gummed up?

Re: fuel problem?

A pharmacist can give you something for the crabs.8)
If the motor has been sitting for any length of time then there is a good chance the carbs are gummed up. The only way to clean them is a complete tear down, a good soaking in carb cleaner and blowing them out with compressed air. If you don't have cpompressed air you can blow them out pretty good with aerosol carb cleaner with the little straw. Make sure every passageway, orifice and jet is clean and clear.
As far your choke, put a test light on the purple wire to the choke and see if your getting power when you active the choke switch.

LOL! Yeah I even did spell check but didnt see that one lol!

Carb tear down... what fun..... I was looking them over and was wondering how hard it would be to take them off/apart.... yes she has been sitting, a poor way to treat a boat, really should sell her as the Mrs is five months along and doesnt want to go out in the boat...something about the heat and the way she feels...d:)

Turns out she isn't a Montauk, but a Cohasset....

Re: fuel problem?

Is there anyplace that sells rebuilt carbs for outboards? If I have to go through all the trouble of pulling it would save time putting on new one's than messing around with the old ones....

Re: fuel problem?

73 if the fuel lines have not been replaced, they need to be, cause after you clean the carb, you don't want old hose sluffing off and getting into the carb. the carbs are easy. went back to old post, saw no mention of a manual for the engine. email me and request, awakening a sleeping outboard, and carb settings. your going to need the manual to do the link and sinc, to set the timing and carbs together,, it's simple but extensive multiple step process, and specific to each engine. click my name to get email address.

Thanks Rick!

I found the kits local for $29 each, but that has the needle and seat, it is an OMC kit. I also found a mobile outboard mechanic, gonna give him a call... if he isnt too high I can watch him do it and enjoy cold liquid refreshment! 8)
