Fuel Problem

I have a 1989 Force 9.9 that starts fine without the fuel line from the fuel pump to the carb. It runs until the bowl runs out of fuel. After starting without fuel line we attemped to put the line back on the carb, but as soon as it makes contact with the carb the engine dies. The fuel pump is pumping fuel, and I replaced the diaphram on the pump since the problem. Any thoughts????

Re: Fuel Problem

Sounds like it is flooding, rbutter.

Most likely cause is a leaky/failed float needle valve in the carb.

Re: Fuel Problem

I did a carb inspection a while ago diagnosing and idling issue. I inadvertently installed the float upside down on a 97. Ran perfectly at 75%, real pain to start and lost power at WOT. Gas would run out of the carb intake when the motor was tilted. Flipped the float and tested it by blowing though the fuel supply line while moving the float to confirm it would shut off fuel flow. Reinstalled and perfect for an hour then it blew the head gasket. New head gasket just blew so I think I will have to machine the head for a permanant fix, 0.010 allowable I believe. Motor was overheated and gifted to me so no foul there.
