i was on the lake yesterday, i started up let it warm for a minute idled out of the no wake zone then got on plane, made it about 200 yards then motor sputtered and died. i cheacked everything over re primed and it ran for a couple min then died, motor runs fine if i pump primer bulb every 20-30 sec as i run on plane. does this sound like a fuel pump problem or carb problem. this is on a 1985 evenrude 150xp it has a VRO pump but oil line is capped and i mix fuel 50:1. i was thinking about replacing VRO with a regular fuel pump. any advice will be greatly appriciated

Re: fuel problem

Hi,
I am not expert in boats, but I had this same problem on my 88 Johnson with VRO pump. I had to leave the lake with one of my buddies pumping the prime bulb all the wat to the lauch. I replaced the VRO pump and that soled the problem.

Hope this helps,
Chris

Re: fuel problem

disconnect fuel line, at carb, now turn motor over do you get pulses of fuel? 150 would require 2 inline pumps or the new premix pump.

Re: fuel problem

i started the motor on the muffs today and noticed that there was a puff of smoke every couple sec or so coming from behind the starter it is the intake makifold gasket, i replaced this gasket last year leaking in the same place and was sucking air and leaning air/fuel mix. i think this might be the problem again. what would make the gasket keep failing?
