Fuel Problem!

'83 OMC 3.8L 4 Barrel

This boat had not run for 3 years or so. I'm fixing it up to sell it. Drained the fuel tank, new carb, new fuel line filter.

Took it out last weekend and it ran great for about an hour and then quit, rapid loss of power, small backfire, RPMs fall off and engine stops.

We let it sit for about 2 minutes, then it started OK, and ran fine for about a minute, then stopped as above. Repeat the last sentence about 20 times.

Got back in (Had to get towed the last 1/4 mile, the battery was about gone).

When I got it home and was preparing to price a fuel pump, I remembered that I had not changed the fuel filter in the water seperation can. Took it out, looked pretty gummed up, but did not appear bad enough to stop the fuel flow - I could be wrong about that!. Anyway put a new filter in, it cranks and runs fine with muffs.

I have a see-through filter between the carb and the water-sep filter can, and one thing I noticed when it was not running, I could see fuel splashing into the bottom end of this filter, then just draining back out. The filter never filled up. Now that I've changed the water sep filter, it's filling up like it should.

The question is, was it for sure the filter or could the fuel pump be going out? The pump is about 5 yrs old, no sign of oil in the clear vacuum tube.

I just don't want to get stranded again, or sell the boat if it has a possible problem.

Any thoughts appreciated!!

Tom

Re: Fuel Problem!

take her out and run her.... I know filters can play dirty tricks with ya, slightest drop in pressure will play haveck, take her out but stay close to the ramp and run her.

Re: Fuel Problem!

sounds exactly like what you fixed. BTW, that tube to the carb is for gasoline-not oil. if you see any gas in that line it means the diaphram is bad.

Re: Fuel Problem!

Snake Bit: I've got an 85, 3.8, 2bbl. Hasn't been run for 4 or 5 years. I've changed the plugs, water/fuel sep filter, oil, oil filter, points, coil, rotor, and put in about 3 gals. fresh gas. Did not change the plug wires or dist. cap. Did take off the cap to try to find a new one but couldn't. It looks ok. I did not have fire from the coil before but do now. Problem is it won't start still. It gave a couple huffs and that was it. I may have the plug wires in the cap wrong or the points set wrong. I just don't know. I set the point gap at .017 at top dead center. I'm getting fire from the coil though. I know the firing order, but don't know if I started in the right place with the plugs in the cap. Does that sound like the problem to you? Any suggetions.
Thanks,
Cal

Re: Fuel Problem!

Forgot something on the last post. I did not do a carb kit for it. But...if the carb was bad, wouldn't it still try to fire?
Cal

Re: Fuel Problem!

If I remember correctly, the #1 wire should be on the post that is almost directly toward the front of the engine.

You're gonna want to pull and probably change the plugs. Hope you put new points and condenser in when you were messing around in the distributor.

Setting the points is a little tricky, I think the gap is set when the points are at their widest open point, which is not at TDC.

Mine sat about 2 years, and wouldn't even fire. Had to take it to a mechanic. The Electronic Shift Assist module had gone out. That's a little guy that retards the timimg and thus drops the RPMs to make for easier shifting.

The carb was totally gummed up and had to be completely rebuilt.

Good luck!
Tom
