I have a 1989 Ranger with a johnson GT150 v-6 motor. someone has put a elec. inline fuel pump on it and it has gone bad. I want to know if I can just peplace this 12 volt in line elec fuel pump. or do i need to go with a boat type fuel pump by the wat the vro was removed.

Re: fuel problem

I would replace it with a diaphram type marine pump.

I removed the VRO on my 89 model 70 HP Evinrude in 1998 when the VRO failed and I had to rebuild the powerhead.

Been working great ever since.

Re: fuel problem

Glad to see someone else feels the way I do about VRO. I've seen too many motors go because of faulty oil injection systems both on boats and motorcycles. One thing about premix...If it's running it's getting oil !

Re: fuel problem

If you do decide to replace the electric fuel pump with another electric pump, make sure it is a marine electric fuel pump. Marine pumps are ignition protected, that is they won't create a spark to ignite gas fumes. An automotive electric fuel pump will. That could ruin your whole day, not to mention your boat.

But I agree, go with the diaphragm type pump.

Re: fuel problem

putting an electric fuel pump on a 2 stroke, is creating a

BOMB

2 stroke do not have oil sumps, like 4 stroke, where the switch for the fuel pump is located. without oil pressure, on a 4 stroke, the fuel pump does not work.

don't say you can switch it with the igniton. the motor stalls, the ignition stays on, the pump stays on.

if you care about your boat, yourself, and passengers. DO IT CORRECTLY.
