Ok, since my last posts here is where I am. First of all can anybody tell me for sure what year model this motor is? I have replaced the fuel tank, hoses and connectors and installed a glass in-line fuel filter. After doing all this I notice that the fuel filter is never full while running, even tho I pump it as it is running across the lake. Fuel pump problems? If so I will get a kit for it if I can find out the correct year model. With ya'lls help I'll get this thing figured out eventually. Thnx!!!

Your pulling fuel through the filter, not pushing it, What you see is normal. A primer bulb would look the same way if you could look inside of it. That question is always coming up, the primer won't stay solid.

Thnx, R and MCM!! I took the fuel pump off and looked inside it. No torn diaphrams or anything. What makes this pump work? Behind the pump there are 3 screw holes, 2 hold the pump on the motor. What is the middle screw hole for? Also I notice that there is a hole in the back of the fuel pump that goes into the main part of the pump. Nothing should seal this hole? Thnx!!

That hole in the pump aligns with a hole in the powerhead. The pump works from the pressure/vacuum pulses on one cylinder. These pulses operate the pump's diaphram to pump the fuel. The pump has to have a gasket between the pump and the powerhead.

Re: Fuel Problems E40ELCD Evinrude 40HP

My bad!! There was a big gasket between the pump and the power head. I took the fuel pump apart and everything looks good, gaskets, diaphram and such. No trash at all. How do you tell if one is bad? Also, off the fuel pump is a hose that goes to a junction with a hose for each carburetor on it. On the other side of the motor is some sort of electrical switch with wires on it and a red switch that looks like it has something to do with hand crancking. On of the bigger hoses from the fuel pump goes to this thing and it also has 2 smaller hoses coming off that goes to the top of each carburetor. What is all this?

Boz,

Great on the manual, another usefull thing is the parts catalog, it has detailed diagrams/parts lists of all your motors systems.

The same info can be found here, www.Ishopmarine.com click on parts list then find your motor

Re: Fuel Problems E40ELCD Evinrude 40HP

OK, yesterday I took the carburetors off and looked inside them. Couple of small pieces of trash in one. Nothing major ( I don't guess). Also I ohmed out the spark plug wires (again) and the resistance on both was very low. While I was checking I noticed that the meter was changing. I twisted the wire around just a little and it did it again. Went and spent $9 on 2 new wires and when I tried to crank it here in the yard it fired up and revved up top speed in a snap. I knew I had it then. Took a chance and went to the lake about 6PM and when I pushed the throttle forward she ran like a scalded cat!!! A little over $200 just for 2 $9 plug wires to do the trick. I sure appreciate the help that was offered and by the way, I have a manual on the way!! Have a great day and much thnx!!!
