Fuel pump alternative

Hi everyone... I was wondering if you guys could help me with this situation I have. I have a 1989 Johnson 140hp looper(J140TXCEB). Awhile back the vro oil pump side broke down and was disengaged. Started premixing and just recently lost the fuel side. I saw on the maxrules.com site that the fuel pump 4-7359
Was the fuel only pump for my motor. I am still finding the price a bit steep for me. Would there be a cheaper alternative to this pump with enough psi for my motor? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That thing will work but it is not a bolt on replacement. It will require some modification of the motor to get it to work, do not suggest it.

There are OEM pumps you can use on that motor that will bolt right up.

Easy to take the pump apart for inspection.---May be a simple repair.

I took it apart several times and could not see anything out of the ordinary

Is there a positive pulse and a slight negative pulse at the pulse limiter ?-----What does a compression test show on this motor ?.---How does the motor behave when you operate the manual pump ?----Myself I would go to the shelf and install a pump from a 66 model 100 hp.---I have lots of parts and would never ever spend $ 400 on a fuel pump.

Compression is 100 on all 4 cylinders. I'm not to familiar on the positive negative pulse thing.. I crank the motor and will idle high when I kick it in gear it dies until I hit the choke but only stays alive for a bit. I put it back in neutral and start it up again and is hard to crank.I believe it's flooding the bowls.. I had seen another post somewhere and the guy had the identical symptoms and it turned out to be his fuel side of his vro.

What happens when an assistant operates the manual pump ???-----Not sure why you would spent big $$ because you read a post somewhere.---Do the trouble shooting.

You can't flood the bowls unless the float needles aren't seating correctly, it would have nothing to do with the fuel pump, but stuck needles could cause it to die.

If you squeeze the bulb it will take over the job of the fuel pump and the motor should run correctly, that is if the fuel pump or an air leak is the problem.

And is it hard to get to crank, or hard to start, they are different things?

What I meant was the cranking gets slower but eventually turns on...fixing to take the pump apart now.

Cranking slower might indicate the following.---Bad starter.--Bad battery.---Bad cables.-----Perhapas you do not have fuel pump problems.----Start some trouble shooting.---The guessing gets too expensive !!

Well so far I've found a crack in the entry fuel port

A leak there could cause it to die and be difficult to start back up. Squeeze the bulb and see if any fuel leaks out, just because none comes out doesn't mean it doesn't suck air though.
