Re: Fuel pump and carb questions

Is there a hose barb for the fuel line, and for the clear hose (fuel pump safety) line? Or, does the clear hose go in the bottom of the carb on that big fitting?
ya can see the fuel line in my pic. it's the black metal one on the right of my pic. the fuel line connection is fore and on the port side of the carb. it has a regular screw type fitting w/ a screen in it. ya can see in fishermarks pic where the clear line goes. starboard side, just under the fa, on the barb...... nothing connets to the big fitting on the bottom......

Yes, the orig part on all the Merc engines I've had was just a piece of metal pipe mitre'd on the end, stuffed up against the flame arrestor
yep, a pretty lame connection. but it's a place to connect the hose to......

i agree w/ achris, somethings up with yer valve cover..... i'm guessin my pic is the oem one. i also looked at my valve cover off my 72. it's just like yer is. my 72 for sure had an engine replacement too. i think from a truck......

Re: Fuel pump and carb questions

I certainly don't know for sure if the valve cover is original Merc or not.... I know that the side lifter covers are Mercrusier specific - it says so on the side. :) I also believe the valve cover is Mercruiser specific as well - it is a heavy guage aluminum cover. I would THINK the truck version would have a stamped steel cover. I used to have a similiar engine in my car - a 1956 Chevy. It had the 235 straight six - the valve cover on that was stamped steel - not aluminum.

Here's one more picture showing more of the valve cover:

So I don't know if they changed over the years, or just what exactly... but I guess it is a moot point. I will go ahead and fashion a fitting on the flame arrestor for the vent hose and connect the safety/overflow hose from the fuel pump to the fitting which is already on the carb. Thanks again to all who posted!
