fuel pump fuel filter question

Apologies if I'm hijacking this thread, but my question is somewhat related. I'm in the process of emptying old fuel from my Mercruiser 5.7 and want to replace the fuel filter and install a water separator. On the front starboard corner of the engine is what appears to be the fuel pump and filter housing. This device has some electrical connections on top and a red "reset" switch on the front. What's this switch for?

As for replacing the filter, it looks like a regular oil filter canister, so is it a case of just unscrewing it and replacing it? Where does the water separator go? After the tank and before the pump/filter arrangement or somewhere else?

And finally, what's the best way to identify my engine. As stated, it's a 5.7 litre with what appears to be a single carb and is from 1990.

Any info much appreciated.

Ayuh,.... That fuel filter, IS the water separator,....

The circuit breaker is part of the motor's electrical system,...
