fuel pump - how does it work

I rebuilt my fuel pump today and it works fine. After completing this relatively simple job, I couldn't understand the basic principle of how my '95 Merc 40hp fuel pump works. How does it get a pulse if there is no pulse line. I didn't see any obvious connections to one of the cylinders. So why does it pump gas?<br /><br />Thanks.

Its all mathamatics. It works by the vacume of the motor.<br /> Even today, I cant get a good description in my head, I just know how to fixem. Dont feel like your the only one lost, now that your pumps rebuilt, find another problem to worry about.
