I have 1990 150hp Johnson. Can anyone advise how exactly I locate the fuel tank internal pick up tube? I am having problems with the fuel pump and before replacing it am trying to cover all the bases. How do I locate this and I am not really sure my engine even has that. Please anyone's help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

What is the problem you are trying to find exactly? To jump from a fuel pump to a tank pick-up, your skipping a whole lotta parts between which can give you trouble. If you feel it could be a supply side issue, I'd keep it simple & temporarily rig your fuel pump to draw off a portable tank to see if the problem persists. I'm sure with some more information, other more experienced members could help you out better...

Re: Fuel Pump Issue??? Please help

Thanks

We have a 1989 Sea Ray with a Johnson 150 v6 motor. We have been experiencing what we believe is fuel problems ( motor is running rough, sputters, and stalles if the primer bulb is not being pumped. Last week we had it out on the water with these problems, I asked my wife to pump the primer bulb, she did and the boat ran great! When not pumping the bulb the motor runs a little rough and then stalles. We changed the primer bulb, all the hoses, water separator from gas tank to engine , and did a shock treatment with sea foam but am still having same issues. Tried connecting a 1 gal. tank inline with seafoam to primer bulb then to motor, but still had the same issues. Not sure if we can use this same test if we are usinig seafoam in the 1 gal. tank. Looked at the intake manifold, all looked clean. we would like to make sure we check everything before going to the fuel pump.

Any help would be helpfull
Thanks

you've done every thing right so far.you eliminated your pick up tube by squeezing primmer bulb and by changing fuel line that problem is gone sounds like running out of gas.by squeezing the bulb you are bypassing the check valves and manually filling your float bowls.go ahead rebuild your fuel pump.note look for tares in pump diaphiam.

Thanks for the advice!
I opened up dual fuel pump and discovered that the diaphram with rubber boot on outside has a yellow plastic part (part of diaphram) with 8 teeth that have separated

You are in the VRO pump. not all parts are replaceable. I suggest replacing the pump. This pump moves both the fuel and the oil for your engine and mixes it to the ration based on engine demand. A lot on here will tell yout eliminate it but the system has been very dependable and convenient. Yes it is less expesive to put an old stlye pump on but you loose the convenience of the pump mixing the oil. I have personaly only seen 2 engines were the oil pump did not supply the oil needed since they came out in 84-85. I have in that time seen more people forget to put oil in the gas!

Re: Fuel Pump Issue??? Please help

The VRO pumps were basically replaced by OMS pumps around 1993. The OMS pumps average around 60:1 gasoline to oil and have other changes.

The VRO pumps can be repaired on the gasoline side with a readily available kit. The electronics and the oil side are not repairable.

The following link shows the parts that come with the available repair kit: http://maxrules.com/lots/VRO_Kit.jpg

Yes, and yes.

Maxrules.com has the kit. If you get it there, he has instruction sheets that you can ask for which will help.

I would probably get that from my local dealer and save time and shipping. Pick the third choice and use your area code for a good list: http://dealerlocator.evinrude.com/EN/?Rnd=1172157085156

If the pulse limiter is black, upgrade to the blue and gold one.

Where is the pulse limit exactly? Also if we buy this kit how do we know if it will fit my vro pump?

Thanks so much for your help.

Re: Fuel Pump Issue??? Please help

E-mail Billy Kelly at Maxrules.com. He will stand by what he tells you and back up what he sells.

The pulse that drives a fuel pump comes from the vacuum or pressure that is created by the movement of one piston.

In order to prevent damage to the VRO pumps, a device called a pulse limiter was installed and was either in-line in a hose, or threaded to fit an opening in the intake manifold.

the pulse limiter is a check valve that stops the pressure from being too great because of, for example, a backfire.

The pulse limiters were upgraded in the early 1990's to a blue and gold model which was superior in function.

Re: Fuel Pump Issue??? Please help

Thanks a lot for the help. We noticed some gasoline coming down the carburators when we were testing the prime bulb again. Do you know why would that happen? Also would you let me know where exactly is the O2(oxygen) sensor located on the engine? We wonder if this has anything to do with our problem.
Also we have another question regarding the prime ball: Should it remain hard after it has been primed? How do you know if it is bad or not?

We did find the pulse limiter and it is gold. We emailed Bill and are waiting for a reply.

Re: Fuel Pump Issue??? Please help

We rebuilt the fuel pump and worked ok for a couple of minutes at idle. Changed the primer bulb again to a better quality one. We can still feel that engine needs more gas, we can feel the pulse while holding the primer bulb.
Any other ideas on what we can do. We need to take thos boat to the keys in 2 weeks. Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.
