Over the weekend I rebuilt the carborator and the fuel pump with a kit on my '64 Merc 60 6hp. I followed the service manual, tuned the idle screw right in the middle to where it ran the best in a tank or trashcan (in gear warmed up). I figured if it was hard to start the next day, I would make it less lean. Well, it was hard to start, as always but I decided not to adjust it. Took 8 pulls. I idled it about 100 yards out of the no wake zone, gunned it and it ran about 10 seconds and died right when it started reaching top speed. The bulb was as tight as it could get. It then wouldn't start unless I squeezed the bulb so hard that fuel would spill out of the exhaust of the float bowl. It would run 20 seconds in idle or about 5 seconds at WOT and then die. I even tried pumping the bulb will it was running and it would still die every time. When it dies I noticed it would "spit" at the fuel hose that connects from the crankcase to the fuel pump. I had replaced this hose. The old one had a few tiny holes in it so I replaced it. It shouldn't have holes should it? Tonight I am going to put the old hose back in and see what happens. If that doesn't work I guess I well rebuild the carb again. I did notice there was a lot of trash in my gas tank. Maybe some trash clogged up my carb. Anybody else have any ideas. I was really wanting to get this motor running so I could sell it and get a 9.8hp. The Merc60 is just too slow (8mph is too slow). I think I will start a new thread on the best 10hp to get.
