Fuel pump rebuild

Got my fuel pump rebuild kit for 91 115 merc 2 stroke. Question: the instructions tell me to drill and chamfer the holes for the retainer pins that hold the nylon valves. Is this something new? I'm not a good machinist and thought this was a easy thing to do. But drilling precise holes plus chamfering the holes is beyond my ability.

Should I just reorder a complete fuel pump? I would rather pay $80 for it to be right than drill and hope I'm right! Thanks all.

Re: Fuel pump rebuild

Byrdog,
There is nothing in Merc manual like that. Only thing I can think of is that sometimes the stem on the valve doesn't always break off smooth where you don't have a full hole to insert stem. Just take a bit the size of stem or slightly larger and turn it by hand to clean out the burr where it breaks apart. Just open hole don't run down in valve. Good luck,
Bob

Re: Fuel pump rebuild

Thanks North40, I was concerned because the instuctions said if I had the old style rubber retainers I would have to drill .028 holes, then it advised to chamfer the hole so the pin would fit flush. Don't understand why mine needed this but I just used the old rubber retainers and it works ok so far. That pump really pepped up the old motor, even though the old parts looked ok. Thanks again.
