Fuel Pump Safety Device Ford 302???

On my Ford 302/Volvo there is a safety bowl between the diaphragms. It is pictured here:

Someone told me that they have been replaced with a clear tube that goes to the carburetor. If so, where does it connect?

There is nothing wrong with the fuel bowl, I still use mine. However, if you want to change it out for the clear fuel line, you just neet to get a 1/4NPT fitting with a nipple and run it to the carburetor's flame arrestor. If you have the stock carb for the 888, I doubt it has the nipple on the carb throat to attach the tube directly in. I wouldn't mess with it unless you care that much.

I remember yor rig from a different post.
You should have a 3/8 -1/2 rubber hose, that looks like a pcv valve in the rear of your starboard valve cover. It should curl at the rear if the intake manifold and tie into either a) a 1" spacer below the carb b) a spud into a vacuum port on the intake manifold c) less likely, a vacuum port on the carb.

That is a vacuum line. you can "t" into it. That way if the diaphram in the fuel pump let's go, it will safely go into the intake and engine.

I think I could tie into the spacer like suggested, tapping a 1/4" hole. I had a fuel pump fail once and the bowl partially filled and the engine ran rough. It seemed to do the job so I may just leave it alone.

That is a vacuum line. you can "t" into it. That way if the diaphram in the fuel pump let's go, it will safely go into the intake and engine.

Don't even think about doing that, then you have a vacuum leak, or worse. You would be pulling a vacuum on the diaphram.


All you have to do is use a small piece of copper tubing and push it through the fins of the flame arrestor and use some JB weld or 5200 to hold it in place. Position it so any fuel will drop down into the throttle bores. Then hook a small clear hose from the pump (where the bowl was) to the flame arrestor. Done deal.
And, you aren't compromising the vacuum system.

Good point. Do you think that is better than just leaving the bowl as it was? It worked before.

There is no reason to change it unless you are just that worried about not noticing fuel in the bowl. Once the diaphram ruptures, it pushes the fuel into that bowl and you can see it. It can't escape into the bilge, and hoefully you check the bowl routinely so that you notice it being full of fuel. Have no idea why they changed the design though, unless people just ignored the fuel bowl being filled up for a long time.
