fuel pump test-'85 johnson 30hp

to test the fuel pump do you crank it and then remove the hose going to the bottom of the carb? or the smaller hose to the top of the carb? the bottom one is very difficult to pull off while the starter is mounted.
also, can you pull it off before you start cranking ?

What would you see if you pull the outlet line AFTER you crank it? Of course before, and make sure the motor can't start.
