Fuel pump test

I am testing my fuel pump by disconnecting the fuel line going into the carburetor and then cranking the engine (with plugs disconnected). I just wanted to get an idea if it is working normally. How much fuel should flow out of the line? All my filters were just changed and squeezing the bulb causes good flow. But when cranking, I just see a slight "spurt, spurt, spurt" of fuel is this right?

Re: Fuel pump test

You should get a consistent flow of fuel as the engine turns over!
You didn't mention the last time the fuel pump was rebuilt or if it had been, but the way you describe the fuel flow, I'd go ahead and rebuild the pump, it's easy and cheap to do! I rebuild mine ever year!
Plus waiting for a tow in the hot sun is the pits! max!

Re: Fuel pump test

Thanks Maxum I appreciate some assurance.
I rebuilt this one about two years ago and if I recall there was a good strong flow when I cranked the engine. I am giving this engine a good going over. It started acting up a bit at the end of my last trip, and felt like a fuel flow issue. I have replaced all filters and the carbs are soaking in solvent as I type. Next stop Iboats or eBay for fuel pump.

Don't forget to check for trash in the fuel tank while your at it and check your gas line for air leaks! max!
