Fuel Pump - Where is it?

Hello Everyone -
First want to say that I have been using these forums for a long time but never became a member until today. There is sooo much helpful information on here, and I hope I willl be able to contribute to some of the conversations at some point here.

Moving on to my issue. I have a 1983 SeaRay Seville 195 with a Mercury in it. I went to start it up for the first time of the season (I know late, but better late then never), and I was not getting any fuel back to the motor. I pulled the air cleaner off and looked down the carb when my helper pumped the throttle. No gas. Trying to remember from last time I had her out, I thought I could hear the fuel pump run from the tank area. I peeked up at the tank and saw the filler tube, over flow tube, and a glob of sealant with 1 wire coming out (pinkish in color) and what appeared to be a couple wires grounded to the tank. I am thinking that the glob of sealant is for fuel gauge. I checked the side of the motor and the fuel line goes from the carb back to the water fuel separator, then started it journey back to the tank.

So, where is this dang pump? :)

Thanks in advance.

Re: Fuel Pump - Where is it?

You might tell us what motor you have. I will assume a carb'ed 150HPV6, but it is a wild guess. Why not look up the motor on the crowleymarine.com web site. It will shoe you the fuel pump. On a V6, you should see the fuel line come from the the carbs, back to the fuel pump. Between the fuel pump and the carb's there will be a tee where the oil would be injected by the oil injection pump. You should see the oil line from the resevoir on top of the motor to the oil injection pump.

Sorry about that - It is an Murcruser 198HP I/O (2 barrel carb). I have not been able to locate any good places that allow me to look up the part my Year/Make/Model of boat to find the fuel pump. I am also not that familiar with the motor to be able to locate the part with the information I know.

This should be posted in the MerCruiser forum, instead of the Mercury/Mariner outboard forum.

Re: Fuel Pump - Where is it?

The original motor would usually have a mechanical fuel pump on it. It will look much like an automotive fuel pump. Trace the steel fuel line back from the carb. it will go to the fuel pump, near a round cap on the fuel pump, on the starboard side of the boat, mounted on the block. Normally a rubber line will go from the pump to the fuel tank. Since you have a water seperator which was not standard, it may have other non-standard parts.

The original carbs had a type of stone filter under the fuel pump cap, and a small paper filter in a fitting that attached to the carb body.

Thanks for the info! I was able to locate the fuel pump. Exactly where you stated. It was between the water/Fuel Separator and the carb. Connected to both with hard lines. There was a flex line that went from the tank to the separator. In part of my troubleshooting I pulled the separator filter off, emptied it about 7/8 full, and replaced it empty. Tried cranking it over again for about a total of 60 seconds (short 10 sec bursts on the starter followed by 30 sec pause) after this process (about 5 min) i pulled the separator off again and it was bone dry still. I pulled the flex house off the separator, applied some suction to the hose nothing came out (well about 1/4 ounce came out but nothing major) So I then applied some pressure back on the line with my air compressor it did not appear to allow any air to flow back to the tank. So this leads to my next question. Is there a check valve at the the tank? The tank is up in the bow of the boat under the dash. I was going to have my brother-in-law come over (little thinner then myself :) ) and see if he can pull the line off up at the tank and see if we can push air though the hose from the tank end to the motor side to verify that the fuel line is clear. I know there is a 90 degree elbow at the tank where the hose connects and the other end goes into the tank. What is inside of the tank. I assume a hose, weighted maybe to keep it on the bottom of the tank, Filter? Check valve? Is it ok to apply additional air pressure back to the tank?

Re: Fuel Pump - Where is it?

Normally a built in fuel tank will have an antisiphon valve in the fuel pickup tube or as part of the hose barb on the fuel tank pickup. The A-S valve has a ball and spring designe to seal the tank from any back pressure and to require some small vacuum in order to withdraw fuel from the tank. They do get clogged.

Unscrew the hose barb and see what you have. if you don't see it, remove the fuel pickup tube and see if the screen is clogged or the A-S valve is in the fuel pickup tube. With that I/O you really need to have an A-S valve, so clean or replace it.
